Landing Page Validation: Test Your SaaS Idea Before Building
What You're Testing
A landing page test validates:
- Positioning — Does your headline resonate?
- Problem awareness — Do people recognize the problem?
- Interest level — Will they give you their email?
- Traffic channels — Can you reach your audience?
You're NOT testing the product (it doesn't exist yet). You're testing whether your pitch resonates.
Build the Page
Essential Elements
- Headline — Clear value proposition (what they get)
- Subheadline — Who it's for and how it helps
- 3-4 Key Benefits — With icons or brief descriptions
- Email Signup — "Join the waitlist" or "Get early access"
- Social proof (optional) — "Join 500+ others" or testimonials
Tools to Use
- Carrd — $19/year, fast and simple
- Typedream — Free tier, good templates
- Framer — More design control
- Lovable/Bolt — If you want custom code
Spend max 1 day building the page. It doesn't need to be perfect.
Headlines That Convert
Formula: [Outcome] for [Target] without [Pain Point]
Examples:
- "Get more customers from your content — without writing more"
- "Ship React apps 10x faster — without the boilerplate"
- "Automate your bookkeeping — without the accountant fees"
Test Multiple Headlines
Create 2-3 versions and A/B test. The headline is the single biggest factor in conversion.
Driving Traffic
Free Traffic Sources
- Reddit — Share in relevant subreddits (follow their rules)
- Twitter/X — Post about the problem you're solving
- Indie Hackers — Share your journey, get feedback
- Hacker News — "Show HN" for technical products
- LinkedIn — If B2B, post about the industry problem
- Product Hunt — Launch your landing page as "coming soon"
Paid Traffic (Optional)
- Google Ads — Target problem keywords ($50-200 test)
- Facebook/Instagram — Interest targeting ($50-100 test)
- Reddit Ads — Subreddit targeting (cheap)
Start with free traffic. Only pay if you can't reach people organically.
Measuring Success
Key Metrics
- Visitors — How many people saw the page
- Signups — How many gave their email
- Conversion Rate — Signups / Visitors
What's Good?
| Conversion Rate | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| 0-1% | Weak. Rethink positioning or target audience |
| 1-3% | Decent. Worth exploring further |
| 3-5% | Good. Strong interest signal |
| 5%+ | Excellent. High demand, build it |
Sample Size
You need at least 200-500 visitors to have confidence in your conversion rate. Below that, random chance affects results too much.
Interpreting Results
High Traffic, Low Conversion
Problem: You can reach people, but your pitch doesn't resonate.
Actions: Test different headlines, refine value proposition, interview people who didn't sign up.
Low Traffic, High Conversion
Problem: People want it, but you can't reach them.
Actions: Explore more traffic channels, consider paid ads, refine targeting.
Low Traffic, Low Conversion
Problem: Neither distribution nor pitch is working.
Actions: Go back to customer interviews. You may be solving the wrong problem.
High Traffic, High Conversion
You've validated demand. Time to build.
