A Practical Guide to Niche Scoring for Non-Technical Founders
The pillar guide for non-technical founders running niche scoring. Fifteen minutes that catches the worst niche picks before contractor commitment.
Step One: List Five Candidates
Five candidate niches. The exciting one. Two adjacent niches. Two unrelated niches. The contrast is the entire point.
Step Two: Score Each on Five Criteria
Reachability, pain frequency, existing spend, differentiation, builder-fit. One to ten each. Sum and compare.
Reachability (1-10)
Can you reach the audience without paid ads? Specific channel - LinkedIn search, niche community, subreddit, conference. If you cannot name the channel, score 4 or below.
Pain Frequency (1-10)
How often does the trigger event happen? Daily problems get bought. Weekly are strong. Monthly workable. Annual very hard.
Existing Spend (1-10)
Do customers in this niche pay for adjacent solutions today? Spend twenty minutes searching. The number anchors your pricing later.
Differentiation (1-10)
Specific mechanism for specific user. Not slogan. Score by what the customer would notice.
Builder-Fit (1-10)
Audience and trust, not interest. Existing audience, lived experience, professional network. Without one of those, score 5 or below.
Step Three: Sanity Check Top Two
For the top two candidates, write one paragraph "why this would work" and one paragraph "why it would not." If "not work" is more concrete, score is wrong.
Step Four: Pick and Move
Highest score wins. Schedule five problem interviews against it within a week. Score is permission to continue, interviews are validation.
Common Failure Modes
Inflated builder-fit by interest. Skipped existing-spend research. Aesthetic-driven differentiation. Reachability without channel specifics. Three weeks of deliberation. Each detailed in other posts.
What Happens After
If interviews validate the niche, pick a build approach (no-code, contractor, agency) and commit. If interviews kill the niche, re-score five new candidates. Fifteen minutes per cycle.
The Trade
Fifteen minutes catches the wrong-niche picks before any cash leaves your account. The alternative is paying contractors for three months on a niche scoring would have flagged in fifteen minutes.
