First-time founders make a specific set of mistakes when scoring niches. Most trace back to wanting the answer they wanted before they started.
Mistake: Scoring Only One Candidate
You decided which niche before scoring. You score it generously to confirm. There are no other candidates. The exercise is theater.
Replace with: list at least four other candidates, even ones you find boring. The contrast is what makes the score useful.
Mistake: Inflating Builder-Fit
You score builder-fit at 9 because you are excited. Excitement is not a fit advantage. Real fit means existing audience, expertise, network, or lived experience that competitors do not have. If you cannot name the specific advantage, builder-fit is a 5 or below.
Mistake: Generous Reachability Without Channel Specifics
You score reachability high because the audience exists. Existing is not reachable. Reachable means you can name the specific channel and predict response rate. If you cannot, score lower.
Mistake: Confusing Pain Severity With Pain Frequency
A severe but rare pain (annual tax filing) does not score the same as a moderate frequent pain (weekly status reports). Frequency is what gets bought because frequency is when the customer feels the problem.
Mistake: Skipping Existing Spend
The existing spend criterion is the most predictive. Founders skip it because it is harder to estimate. Estimate anyway. If customers in this niche pay zero for adjacent solutions, you are educating a market.
Mistake: Differentiation by Slogan
Your differentiation is "simpler" or "cheaper" or "faster." Those are slogans. Real differentiation is specific - what mechanism, for what user, that the alternatives lack.
Mistake: Trusting the Score Blindly
The highest score is your starting point, not your destiny. The score is a filter for the worst picks. The chosen niche still needs interviews. Treat the number as "permission to continue," not as validation.
