What Working Niche Scoring Looks Like (Non-Technical Founders)
A worked example. Non-technical founder leaving a marketing job, considering five niches.
The Candidates
Tools for indie creators. Tools for small marketing agencies. Tools for SaaS marketers. Tools for nonprofit fundraising. Tools for podcast networks.
The Scores
Indie creators: R7 F7 S6 D5 B6 = 31. Small agencies: R7 F8 S9 D5 B7 = 36. SaaS marketers: R8 F7 S9 D5 B8 = 37. Nonprofit fundraising: R5 F6 S6 D6 B4 = 27. Podcast networks: R5 F5 S5 D5 B5 = 25.
The Surprise
SaaS marketers won by one point. The founder had been excited about indie creators - it scored fourth. The boring SaaS marketer niche had higher reachability and stronger builder-fit (the founder had worked alongside SaaS marketing teams).
What the Founder Did
Picked SaaS marketers. Ran problem interviews. Found a sharp angle (campaign reporting was the universal pain). Hired a contractor against a tight spec. Shipped in nine weeks. The first ten customers came from the audience the founder already had on LinkedIn.
What Working Scoring Catches
The exciting niche scored fourth. Without scoring, the founder would have built for indie creators - reachable but with weaker existing spend. The product would have struggled to find paying customers. Scoring redirected the work toward the niche where the contractor budget would actually produce revenue.
